For the first time in its history, Germany’s fleet of battery-electric passenger cars (BEVs) has exceeded two million vehicles in active registration. Data released by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) shows that as of 1 January 2026, a total of 2 034 260 BEVs were registered on German roads, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward electrified transport. Factual overview of the milestone BEV fleet size: 2 034 260 battery-electric passenger cars on German roads at the beginning of 2026. Historical growth: The BEV stock has grown rapidly over the past decade, from just 34 022 units in 2017 to more than two million by early 2026, an almost 60-fold increase in nine years. Annual expansion: The BEV fleet expanded by 382 617 vehicles between 1 January 2025 and 1 January 2026, underscoring sustained demand and fleet renewal momentum. The crossing of the two-million threshold reflects not just cumulative historical registrations, but also a dynamic market that has continued to scale up despite broader challenges in the overall new-car market in recent years. Regional distribution and market patterns KBA data indicates significant regional variation in BEV adoption across Germany’s federal states. North Rhine-Westphalia accounts for the largest BEV population, with 454 783 registered units. Bavaria follows closely with 395 271 BEVs, while Baden-Württemberg hosts 322 060 units. Other states such as Lower Saxony (221 823) and Hesse (179 213) also feature strongly. In contrast, several eastern German states — including Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, report lower BEV penetration, with share figures between 2.0 % and 2.3 % of the total passenger car stock. The concentration of BEVs in larger, economically stronger states suggests that regional economic conditions, charging infrastructure availability, and consumer demand currently influence the pace of electrification. Context within broader electrification trends This milestone takes place against a backdrop of expanding electrification of road transport across Europe. While Germany has lagged some neighbouring countries in pure electric fleet share, the growth trajectory shows a clear transition toward zero-emission vehicles over the last decade. In 2025, BEVs and other electrified vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) accounted for a rising share of new passenger car registrations, indicating that electrification continues to make inroads into broader consumer and fleet purchasing decisions. Policy and market implications Reaching over two million BEVs in Germany carries several implications for transport electrification policy and market development: Climate strategy alignment: The expanding BEV fleet contributes directly to national and EU-level greenhouse gas reduction ambitions, particularly in the transport sector. Infrastructure planning: Continued BEV uptake reinforces the case for robust charging infrastructure deployment, particularly in regions with lower BEV penetration. Market confidence: Surpassing this fleet milestone sends a strong signal to industry and consumers that electrified vehicles are transitioning from emerging technology to mainstream mobility options. Moving forward, policymakers and industry stakeholders will likely monitor not only absolute fleet size, but also share of total passenger vehicles, charging infrastructure readiness, and equitable regional deployment, key elements for sustaining the pace of electrification through the remainder of the decade.
