In 2025, Slovakia’s electric vehicle (EV) market showed solid progress, with notable gains reported across passenger and commercial segments, alongside an increasingly visible presence of EVs on the road. Passenger EV Expansion By the end of 2025, there were approximately 24 661 battery electric passenger cars (BEVs) registered in Slovakia, reflecting a sustained buildup of the national electric fleet. In total, 26 293 battery electric vehicles across all categories were on Slovak roads by year-end. In the fourth quarter of 2025, SEVA data shows 3 426 new BEVs registered in the M1 category, complemented by 1 879 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). A key market milestone was achieved in 2025: for the first time, the share of BEVs in new passenger car registrations exceeded 5 %, a breakthrough threshold that often signals faster mainstream adoption. In December 2025, an average of 66 new BEVs were registered on each working day, demonstrating an acceleration in monthly uptake. AF Market share of total registrations (M1) Newly registered alternative fuelled (BEV, PHEV, H2, LPG, CNG, LNG) passenger cars as a percentage of the total number of registrations. These figures together indicate that Slovakia’s electric passenger car uptake is moving beyond early adopters, with electric vehicles becoming a more common choice for Slovak consumers and businesses alike. Commercial EV Segment Although from a smaller base, electrification in commercial transport expanded: Battery electric vans (category N1) saw growth, alongside smaller increases in battery electric trucks within categories N2 and N3. In the last quarter, Slovakia recorded 243 BEV vans and 56 PHEV vans, along with 8 BEV (N2) and 3 BEV (N3) heavy vehicles. These numbers suggest emerging traction in commercial electrification, particularly for light commercial vehicles where total cost of ownership gains are most pronounced. Charging Infrastructure Development While SEVA’s recent article focuses on vehicle registrations, its broader data repository indicates continued expansion of charging networks. According to SEVA statistics, Slovakia had over 2 800 charging points across more than 1 100 locations, supporting a growing EV fleet. This expansion aligns with overall EU goals to strengthen charging accessibility and to reduce range anxiety for EV users. Market Context and Perception Shift SEVA analysts highlight that surpassing the 5 % BEV share in new registrations is more than a statistical milestone — it reflects a perceptual shift: As more EVs appear on roads and in people’s social circles, consumer familiarity rises, helping overcome traditional hesitations around EV ownership. The availability of more affordable models and a growing used BEV market are expected to further broaden appeal and accelerate new and replacement demand. Outlook Toward 2026 Looking ahead, expectations for 2026 remain cautiously optimistic: Continued growth in passenger EV uptake is anticipated, supported by more competitively priced battery electric models and ongoing improvements in charging infrastructure. Commercial electrification — especially for light vans and urban bus fleets — may gather momentum, particularly where municipal policies and green procurement encourage zero-emission fleets. Challenges persist, including limited fiscal incentives and price sensitivity among consumers, but the trajectory suggests steady progress toward a more mainstream electric mobility market in Slovakia.
