Slovenia: BEVs continued to gain relevance in 2025 surpassing 10% market share

Slovenia 2024

Passenger Car Market (BEV and PHEV)

In 2025, Slovenia registered a total of 57,556 new passenger cars, representing an 8.6% increase compared to 53,018 units in 2024. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reached 6,419 units in 2025, more than doubling from 3,148 units in 2024 (+103.9% year-on-year). Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 1,939 registrations in 2025, up from 1,253 units in 2024 (+54.7% year-on-year).

As a result, BEVs represented approximately 11.15% of total passenger car registrations in 2025, while PHEVs accounted for 3.37%. Combined, plug-in vehicles (BEV + PHEV) captured 14.52% of the Slovenian new passenger car market in 2025.

Electric Commercial Vehicles

In the light commercial vehicle (van) segment, 7,144 units were registered in 2025, a decline of 16.7% compared to 8,577 units in 2024. E-vans totaled 225 units in 2025, a substantial increase from 76 units in 2024 (+196.1%). Electric vans represented approximately 3.15% of total van registrations in 2025.

In the truck segment (medium and heavy combined), Slovenia registered 2,175 trucks in 2025, a slight increase of 2.0% compared to 2,133 units in 2024. E-trucks reached 9 units in 2025, up from 7 units in 2024 (+28.6%), corresponding to a 0.41% market share.

For buses (M2 and M3 categories), 259 units were registered in 2025, marking a strong 42.3% increase over 182 units in 2024. E-buses accounted for 6 units in 2025 compared to 5 units in 2024 (+20.0%), representing approximately 2.32% of total bus registrations.

Charging Infrastructure

As of December 2025, Slovenia had approximately 2,545 publicly accessible charging points, including 2,041 AC chargers and 504 DC fast chargers. The continued expansion of fast-charging infrastructure has supported the rapid growth in BEV registrations, with around 300 new AC charging point and 120 DC charging points being built in 2025.

Outlook for 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, Slovenia is expected to continue its upward trajectory in electric vehicle adoption. The strong year-on-year growth in BEV registrations during 2025 suggests increasing consumer acceptance, improved model availability, and enhanced charging infrastructure coverage. Continued alignment with European Union decarbonization policies, CO2 fleet targets, and potential national incentive schemes are likely to further stimulate demand for fully electric passenger cars. Growth in electric commercial vehicles is expected to remain gradual but steady, particularly in urban delivery fleets and public transport tenders. If infrastructure deployment keeps pace and vehicle supply remains strong, plug-in vehicles could approach or exceed a 15–20% share of new passenger car sales in 2026.
