After a challenging 2024 (with a year-on-year decline of 3.9%), Spain presented strong growth in both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in 2025. Supported by expanding model availability, corporate fleet electrification, and gradual improvements in charging infrastructure, plug-in vehicles consolidated their position as a core pillar of the Spanish automotive market. Rechargeable vehicle adoption in Spain in 2025 In 2025, Spain registered approximately 243,000 rechargeable vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs combined), representing close to 19% of total vehicle registrations. BEVs reached around 114,000 units, increasing by more than 75% year-on-year and accounting for roughly 8.4% of the total market. PHEVs recorded even faster growth, with about 131,000 registrations, more than doubling year-on-year and achieving a market share of around 9.5%. AF Market share of total registrations (M1) Newly registered alternative fuelled (BEV, PHEV, H2, LPG, CNG, LNG) passenger cars as a percentage of the total number of registrations. Focusing on passenger cars, electrified vehicles (BEV + PHEV) surpassed 225,000 registrations in 2025, representing almost one in five new cars sold in Spain. BEV passenger cars alone exceeded 100,000 units for the first time, reaching close to 9% market share. Vans also presented significant growth, reaching over 15,000 units (of which almost 9.000 were BEVs and 6,575 were PHEVs). Meanwhile, heavy vehicles declined slightly, with e-trucks falling to 130 units (-5%) and e-buses falling to 477 units (-28,7%). In the BEV passenger car market, Tesla maintained its leadership in Spain during 2025. The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling electric car of the year, followed by the Tesla Model Y. Newer and more affordable models also gained significant traction, notably the Kia EV3 and the Renault 5 E-Tech, highlighting growing consumer demand in the compact and small-car segments. In the PHEV market, the BYD Seal U DM-i emerged as the top-selling model, reflecting the strong expansion of Chinese brands in Spain. The MG EHS and Toyota C-HR followed closely, while models such as the Ford Kuga and Mercedes-Benz GLC continued to perform well, especially in fleet and company-car channels. Charging infrastructure Spain closed 2025 with close to 50,000 operational public charging points, representing growth of around 35–40% compared to the previous year. However, a significant number of installed chargers were still not operational due to administrative and grid-connection delays, highlighting an ongoing execution challenge. Total number of recharging points, according to the AFIR classification. In addition to overall charger numbers, Spain continues to lag behind leading European markets in the share of fast and ultra-fast chargers. While the total network is expanding steadily, increasing the proportion of chargers above 22 kW remains essential to support long-distance travel and high-usage fleets. What to expect in 2026 With plug-in vehicles approaching 20% of new passenger car registrations, Spain is entering a critical phase of its electric mobility transition. Continued progress will depend on policy stability, further reductions in vehicle prices, and tangible improvements in charging infrastructure availability and quality. The strong momentum observed in 2025 suggests that Spain is narrowing the gap with Europe’s leading electric vehicle markets, and its market should further benefit from the arrival of affordable, competitive models in 2026.
