AFIF Call Results
The European Union is investing nearly €422 million in 39 projects to enhance alternative fuels infrastructure across the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). These projects, selected under the first cut-off deadline of the 2024-2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), align with the EU's commitment to decarbonizing transport and fostering sustainable mobility. The funding is part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), a key EU programme supporting transport infrastructure.
Key Project Highlights
The selected projects will significantly expand alternative fuels infrastructure, including:
- Around 2,500 electric charging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 charging points for heavy-duty vehicles across the TEN-T road network.
- 35 hydrogen refuelling stations for cars, trucks, and buses to promote hydrogen-powered transport.
- Electrification of ground handling services at 8 major airports, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Green port initiatives in 9 European ports, facilitating low-carbon maritime transport.
- 2 bunkering facilities for ammonia and methanol, supporting the shift towards sustainable maritime fuels.
Next Steps
On 4 February 2025, EU Member States approved the selected projects. The European Commission is expected to formally adopt the award decision in the coming months, making the results definitive. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) is currently preparing grant agreements with successful project beneficiaries.
Background and Future Opportunities
The second phase of AFIF (2024-2025) was launched on 29 February 2024, with a total budget of €1 billion:
- €780 million under the general envelope
- €220 million under the cohesion envelope
This funding supports objectives outlined in the Regulation on the Deployment of Alternative Fuels Infrastructure (AFIR), which mandates the deployment of publicly accessible electric recharging stations and hydrogen refuelling stations across Europe's transport corridors and hubs. The initiative also aligns with the goals of ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime regulations, advancing sustainable aviation and maritime transport.
The AFIF call for proposals remains open, providing further funding opportunities for alternative fuels infrastructure. The next cut-off deadline for applications is 11 June 2025.
