Denmark: Movia Reaches Electric Bus Target Six Years Early

Denmark bus

Movia, Denmark's largest public transport operator, has reached a significant milestone by electrifying 50% of its bus fleet in the capital region of Copenhagen and on Zealand. This achievement comes six years ahead of the original 2030 target set in 2020, demonstrating the accelerated pace of Denmark’s transition to clean mobility.

With the addition of 66 new electric buses, Movia’s fleet now includes 565 purely electric buses out of a total of 1,126 buses. This electrification represents over 51 million kilometres per year of emission-free travel, significantly reducing environmental impacts.

Key Environmental Benefits

  • The 66 new electric buses alone are expected to cut annual CO₂ emissions by 3,100 tonnes (tank-to-wheel basis).
  • Lower particulate emissions and noise pollution contribute to a cleaner and quieter urban environment.

Movia's Managing Director, Dorthe Nøhr Pedersen, highlighted the achievement:

“For us at Movia, it is a major milestone that we can now say that half of our buses are electric. We are proud to be contributing to lower CO₂ emissions as well as less noise and particulate emissions. We are now well ahead of the target we set ourselves in 2020 together with municipalities and regions and are now jointly setting a new goal towards even greener public transport.”

New Ambitions: 94% Electrification by 2030

Building on this success, Movia and its partners—local municipalities and the Hovedstaden and Zealand regions—have set a new target: achieving 94% electric bus operation by 2030. This ambitious goal underscores the commitment to sustainable urban transport while acknowledging the operational challenges of electrifying the most demanding routes.

However, Movia is already pushing boundaries by targeting its longest route, line 600S, for electrification. Spanning 74.5 kilometres between Ishøj station and Hillerød station, this route will soon benefit from electric buses equipped with charging infrastructure at terminal stops.

Electrifying Public Transport Across the Region

Movia operates 375 bus routes, of which 158 routes are already served exclusively by electric buses, covering over 51 million kilometres annually. This achievement reflects Movia's leadership in advancing sustainable mobility solutions while supporting Denmark's national climate targets.

The accelerated transition to electric buses not only reduces emissions but also enhances passenger experience through quieter, cleaner journeys. By achieving its goals well ahead of schedule, Movia sets a powerful example for other European regions looking to decarbonize public transport systems.

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) will continue to monitor and showcase such best practices as Europe advances toward its clean mobility targets.
