November 2024 EV Registration Highlights: 25% of New Cars Had a Plug

In November 2024, 25% of all new car registrations in Europe were plug-in vehicles, with 268,000 units sold. While the overall number represents a slight 2% decline year-on-year (YoY), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued their growth trajectory, reaching 185,000 units, up 1% YoY, and accounting for 18% of the total market. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), on the other hand, saw a 9% YoY decline, with 83,000 units registered.

BEVs now represent 69% of all plug-in sales in November, up 2% compared to the year-to-date average, signaling a growing preference for fully electric solutions.

Top Models in November 2024

  1. Tesla Model Y:
    • 16,618 units
    • Despite an 8% YoY dip, Tesla’s crossover returned to the top position, maintaining its dominance in the European EV market.
  2. Skoda Enyaq:
    • 9,936 units
    • The value-oriented crossover grew by 17% YoY, further solidifying Skoda’s position in the EV market.
  3. Tesla Model 3:
    • 8,663 units
    • The midsize sedan saw a sharp 50% YoY decline, reflecting growing competition and market saturation.
  4. VW ID.4:
    • 6,465 units
    • A 10% YoY increase, demonstrating Volkswagen’s continued stronghold in the crossover segment.
  5. Volvo EX30:
    • 6,268 units
    • The compact crossover struggled to regain previous highs after the implementation of Chinese EV tariffs, but its European-made variants could boost sales in 2025.

  • Volkswagen Group’s Strength: Eight models from Volkswagen Group’s portfolio, including the Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.7, and Porsche Macan, made it into the top 20, showcasing the automaker’s diverse EV offerings.
  • Mercedes’ Success: The EQA reached a record 4,641 units, and the EQB followed with 3,748 units, highlighting the demand for Mercedes’ electric SUVs.
  • Renault's Double Win: Both the Renault 5 and Scenic MPV debuted in the top 20, marking Renault’s best EV performance in years.

Year-to-Date Rankings (2024)

  • Tesla Model Y: Secured its position as Europe’s best-selling EV for the third consecutive year, with an 80,000-unit lead.
  • Tesla Model 3: Maintained its runner-up position but faces increasing competition in 2025.
  • Skoda Enyaq: Likely to secure its first European podium finish, edging past the Volvo EX30, which has been affected by Chinese tariffs.
