Spain’s electric mobility market has made a strong start in 2025, with electrified vehicle registrations (BEVs + PHEVs) rising 45.1% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. The total volume reached 44,903 units, across passenger cars, vans, two-wheelers, and industrial vehicles. In March 2025 alone, registrations rose 62.7% year-on-year, totalling 18,303 units, despite uncertainty surrounding the temporary suspension of the MOVES III incentive program. The impressive growth is attributed to pre-existing orders formalised prior to the freeze, highlighting pent-up demand in the sector. Pure Electric Vehicle (BEV) Growth Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded particularly strong gains: March 2025: 9,717 BEVs registered (+74% YoY) Q1 2025 Total: 23,794 BEVs (+57.7% YoY) Passenger cars drove the majority of BEV growth: Passenger BEVs in March: 8,314 units (+93.4%) Q1 total: 19,733 units (+69.1%) Electric vans also saw positive growth: 735 units in March (+49.1%) 1,829 units in Q1 (+44.9%) Electric motorcycle registrations held steady at 337 units in March and grew 8.1% in Q1 (1,166 units). In contrast, electric moped registrations declined 45% in March, despite a 4% increase over the quarter. Meanwhile, heavy-duty electric vehicle categories, including trucks and buses, showed weaker performance and limited market uptake. Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) PHEV registrations also climbed significantly: March 2025: 8,586 units (+51.6%) Q1 2025: 21,109 units (+33.1%) Passenger car PHEVs made up the bulk: March: 8,374 units (+50.3%) Q1: 20,520 units (+30.6%) Van PHEVs saw a remarkable 130% increase in March and an overall 295.3% increase in Q1, albeit from a lower base (589 units YTD). Together, BEVs and PHEVs represented 14.3% of all new passenger car registrations in Q1 2025. Outlook March’s results confirm that Spain’s electrification efforts are gaining traction, particularly in passenger vehicles. However, sustained policy support—including simplified administration and financial incentives—will be critical to accelerating uptake in commercial and heavy-duty segments, as well as ensuring long-term progress aligned with EU goals.
