The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) has spotlighted a new Swedish government subsidy that promises to revamp the eco-friendly commercial vehicle sector. From 13 February 2024, the Energy Agency of Sweden has initiated the payout of a climate premium for light electric trucks, marking a new chapter in the country’s environmental support strategies.
The climate premium is targeted at companies, municipalities, and regions planning to purchase a new light electric truck. Its main objective is to foster the market introduction of eco-vehicles, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to noise reduction and an improved climate.
Application for the subsidy should precede the vehicle's order, and companies can apply through the Energy Agency’s online services using BankID. The premium will fund the price difference between the electric truck and its nearest comparable model, supporting up to 30% of the cost, capped at 50,000 SEK per vehicle.
For decisions made from 1 January 2025, the subsidy cap will decrease to 40,000 SEK and subsequently to 30,000 SEK from 1 July 2025. By 1 October 2025, the Energy Agency will conclude its approval of subsidies for light electric trucks.
The eligibility criteria remain the same across all ownership forms, including leasing arrangements, where the lessee must be the registered owner of the vehicle. The funding applies to vehicles powered exclusively by electricity or hydrogen fuel cells with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons.
This initiative by the Swedish government aligns with the EAFO’s mission to support and monitor the uptake of alternative fuel vehicles across Europe, contributing to the EU Green Deal's goal of achieving a carbon-neutral continent.
