EV registrations and market share. New registrations of battery electric passenger cars amounted to 11,002 units in 2025. This corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 28% compared with 2024, when 8,565 BEVs were registered. Meanwhile, new passenger vehicle registrations reached 129,440 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 6%. As a result, the market share of BEVs in new passenger car registrations rose from 7.0% in 2024 to 8.5% in 2025. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for approximately 5.5% of new passenger car registrations in 2025, with 6.064 sales. This represented a slight increase of 65%, meaning the market for BEVs is growing much faster than the market for PHEVs. AF Market share of total registrations (M1) Newly registered alternative fuelled (BEV, PHEV, H2, LPG, CNG, LNG) passenger cars as a percentage of the total number of registrations. Leading brands and models The most popular battery electric passenger car in 2025 was the Tesla Model Y, with 1,188 registrations during the year. It was followed by the Kia EV3 with 699 registrations and the Tesla Model 3 with 634 units. Other high-ranking models included the BMW iX1 (493 units), BYD Atto 3 (333 units), BYD Sealion 7 (332 units), BYD Seal (294 units), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (279 units), Ford Explorer (262 units), and BYD Dolphin Surf (252 units). At brand level, Tesla remained the leading battery electric vehicle manufacturer in Hungary in 2025, with a total of 1,834 BEV registrations. BYD followed closely with 1,771 registrations, prior to the start of local production in Hungary in Q1 2026. BMW ranked third with 1,108 registrations, followed by Kia (972 units), Hyundai (889 units), Ford (724 units), Mercedes-Benz (546 units), Volkswagen (495 units), Volvo (409 units), and Škoda (329 units). BEV Fleet The battery electric vehicle fleet in Hungary expanded significantly during 2025. By the end of the year, the total number of BEVs registered under the green-plate ‘5E’ category reached 101,534 vehicles, up from 70,386 units at the end of 2024. Passenger cars accounted for the majority of this fleet, with 94,009 vehicles in operation. In addition, the BEV fleet included 7,212 electric trucks, 31 electric tractors, 282 electric buses, and 906 electric motorcycles. The stock of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles registered under the ‘5P’ green-plate category remained broadly stable, increasing marginally from 12,642 vehicles at the end of 2024 to 12,668 vehicles at the end of 2025. Hybrid vehicles registered under the ‘5N’ category reached 31,602 units at the end of 2025, compared with 31,540 units one year earlier. Charging infrastructure Hungary’s public charging infrastructure expanded steadily in line with the growth of the electric vehicle fleet. By the end of 2025 (Q4 2025), the country operated a total of 5,083 public chargers, consisting of 3,580 AC chargers and 1,503 DC fast chargers. Compared with end-2024, this represents a year-on-year increase of 908 chargers (+21.7%), driven by a 410-unit rise in AC chargers (+12.9%) and a markedly stronger 498-unit expansion in DC chargers (+49.6%). The data point to a continued build-out of the network, with growth increasingly concentrated in high-power DC charging infrastructure. What to expect in 2026 Looking ahead to 2026, market developments are expected to continue to be influenced by European Union regulatory requirements, including CO₂ emission targets for new vehicles and the ongoing implementation of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation. Furthermore, the localization of production for BYD models in Hungary could promote adoption of BEVs and PHEVs from this brand.
