EV sales continued to increase in Greece in 2025

Greece 2024

Greece’s new passenger-car market continued to expand in 2025, while electrified powertrains strengthened their position. Plug‑in hybrids accelerated sharply, battery electric cars edged upwards in volume, and hybrids (non‑plug‑in) remained the dominant growth engine. Below, we summarise the latest full‑year figures available for passenger cars, as well as the best‑available evidence on heavy‑duty electrification and public charging rollout.

1) BEV and PHEV passenger-car sales (2025 vs 2024)

Full-year passenger-car registrations reached 144,200 in 2025 (+5.2% year-on-year), up from 137,075 in 2024.

Powertrain  2024 sales  2025 sales  YoY change (units)  YoY change (%)  Share of 2025 passenger-car market
BEV  8,707  8,894  187  2.1%  6.2%
PHEV  8,262  11,657  3,395  41.1%  8.1%
BEV + PHEV  16,969  20,551  3,582  21.1%  14.3%

In market-share terms, PHEVs gained ground in 2025, while BEVs broadly held steady: PHEVs rose to 8.1% of the passenger-car market (from 6.0% in 2024), whereas BEVs accounted for 6.2% (from 6.4% in 2024).

2) Electric trucks and electric buses

Heavy vehicles presented divergent trajectories in their electrification in Greece in 2025. Whereas BEV buses fell by 60% to 110 units, BEV trucks rose to 57 units up from almost none in 2024 (4), or 1.300% growth, though of course this massive figure is due to the very low sales the year prior. Still, BEV buses reached 14.7% of total bus sales, whereas BEV trucks reached 12% of all truck sales in the country.

3) Best-selling BEV and PHEV brands and models (passenger cars)

Most sold EVs, both in the BEV and PHEV segment, present significant variation, with five different brands present in the PHEV top 5 ranking and 4 in the BEV one:

Top PHEV models (2025):

  • BMW X1 – 1,524 registrations
  • Toyota CH-R – 928 registrations
  • Ford Kuga – 767 registrations
  • Volvo XC60 – 685 registrations
  • Mercedes GLA – 627 registrations

Top BEV models (2025):

  • BYD Dolphin – 722 registrations
  • Tesla Model Y – 602 registrations
  • Hyundai Inster – 560 registrations
  • Volvo EX30 – 539 registrations
  • BYD Atto 3 – 458 registrations

4) What to watch in 2026 (forecasts / expectations)

Looking into 2026, the direction of travel is clear: (i) PHEVs are likely to remain a strong bridge technology in Greece as hybrids dominate the broader market, (ii) BEV growth will depend increasingly on price-competitive offerings and dependable fast‑charging coverage on key travel corridors, and (iii) fleet and public‑sector procurement (taxis, municipal fleets and buses) can provide an additional demand anchor.
