EAFO News Flash – June 2026

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) has updated its latest preliminary data covering the registration of 14 of the 27 EU Member States in May 2026. Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reached 184,031, up 27.9% compared with May 2025, while BEVs represented 23.1% of new registrations. Publicly accessible recharging infrastructure reached 1,155,861 points, an increase of 19.1% compared with May 2025.

In EU27, BEV registrations increased by 27.9% year on year in May 2026. The country charts point to broad but uneven growth: Ireland, Slovenia, Romania, France and Italy recorded the strongest year-on-year increases among the countries shown, while France and the Netherlands combined strong absolute BEV volumes with clear month-on-month share gains.BEVs accounted for 23.1% of new registrations in the reporting period. Publicly accessible recharging infrastructure reached 1,155,861 points, up 19.1% compared with May 2025. Infrastructure growth remains a supporting condition for BEV adoption, while the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation provides a common deployment framework for Member States, including fleet-based targets for public charging capacity and requirements intended to improve usability and payment transparency.
