Europe EV Sales Report: A Slowdown in July After June's Sales Rush
The European electric vehicle (EV) market experienced a slight dip in July 2024 following a robust performance in June. Approximately 220,000 plugin vehicles were registered across Europe in July, marking a 6% year-over-year (YoY) decline. This contrasts with the overall automotive market, which saw a modest 2% YoY growth during the same period.
A closer look at the market dynamics reveals that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) performed slightly better than plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), with BEVs experiencing a 6% decline YoY compared to an 8% drop for PHEVs.
Market Influences: Post-Rush Slowdown and Subsidy Challenges
Two key factors influenced the July sales numbers. First, the expected "sales hangover" following the tariff-induced rush for Made-in-China BEVs in June led to a predictable slowdown. Fortunately, the decline was not as severe as anticipated, with BEV sales dropping by just 6% YoY.
Second, the ongoing reduction in subsidies in Germany, Europe's largest automotive market, continues to weigh heavily on overall plugin sales. Germany's underperformance in 2024, particularly in the BEV segment, has had a dampening effect on the broader European market.
Plugin Vehicle Market Share
In July, plugin vehicles accounted for 21% of the overall European auto market, with BEVs making up 14% of that share. This consistency maintained the 2024 year-to-date plugin vehicle market share at 21%, with BEVs holding steady at 14%.
Top 5 BEV Models in July
- Tesla Model Y: Despite ongoing dominance, the Tesla Model Y saw a 16% YoY decline, with 9,929 registrations in July. The midsize crossover continues to lead the market, but competition is intensifying.
- Volvo EX30: Volvo's new EX30 recorded 6,949 registrations in July, securing the second spot. This model is quickly becoming a key player in the market, proving popular across multiple European countries.
- Audi Q4 e-tron: Audi's compact crossover achieved 5,580 registrations, placing it third in July. The Q4 e-tron’s strong performance highlights its appeal, particularly in the premium segment.
- VW ID.4: Volkswagen's crossover is making a comeback with 5,421 registrations in July, almost securing a spot on the podium. The ID.4’s recent refresh appears to be reigniting demand.
- Tesla Model 3: Tesla's sedan recorded 4,976 registrations in July, maintaining its presence in the top 5. However, the Model 3 faces increasing competition and saw a double-digit decline in sales.
Looking Ahead
As the market adjusts to recent changes, including tariff increases and shifting subsidies, the competitive landscape for BEVs in Europe is likely to continue evolving. The consistent market share of plugin vehicles underscores the growing acceptance and adoption of electric mobility across the continent. However, sustaining this momentum will require ongoing investment in infrastructure and supportive policies to meet Europe's ambitious environmental goals.
