Iveco Bus has won a landmark contract for the supply of 411 battery-electric buses to Rome's public transport operator, ATAC, marking the manufacturer’s largest e-bus deal in Italy to date. The agreement, signed on 17 January 2024, is valued at over €300 million and includes a comprehensive 10-year full-service maintenance plan.
This milestone follows Iveco’s other recent successes in Italy, with additional orders for 153 e-buses in Milan and 225 in Turin, further consolidating the company’s role as a key player in Italy's transition to sustainable urban mobility.
Details of the Contract
- Delivery Timeline: The first batch of 110 e-buses will arrive in the last quarter of 2024, with the remaining vehicles delivered by April 2026.
- Vehicle Specifications: Both 12-metre and 18-metre models will be equipped with advanced NMC batteries, offering a single-unit capacity of 69.3 kWh. The batteries are assembled at FPT Industrial’s state-of-the-art e-plant in Turin.
- Safety and Comfort: The vehicles will feature the latest ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) to ensure compliance with the General Safety Regulation (GSR), offering enhanced safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
- Maintenance Support: Maintenance services will be provided by Romana Diesel, Iveco’s official dealer for the Lazio region, ensuring full vehicle availability throughout the contract’s 10-year duration.
Driving Rome’s Sustainable Mobility Goals
This contract represents a significant step toward decarbonizing public transport in Rome and aligns with Italy’s broader ambitions for clean mobility. By transitioning to emission-free buses, ATAC aims to reduce urban air pollution, improve passenger experience, and contribute to meeting national and EU climate targets.
Domenico Nucera, President of Iveco Group’s Bus Business Unit, highlighted the importance of this achievement:
“We are extremely proud to be a key contributor to Rome’s transition towards greener and more efficient mobility. Extending this to the capital of Italy, the ‘Eternal City’, is a fitting way to begin 2024, after closing a very satisfying year in terms of orders for Iveco Bus.”
Giorgio Zino, Head of IVECO BUS Europe Commercial Operations, added:
“Our E-Way buses benefit from state-of-the-art solutions to provide drivers and passengers with a comfortable and emission-free journey. This new success confirms that our E-WAY solution perfectly meets the decarbonization expectations of Italian public transport.”
A Growing Momentum for Electric Buses in Italy
The combined orders for Rome, Milan, and Turin demonstrate a nationwide shift toward electric mobility, with cities increasingly prioritizing sustainable and efficient public transport systems. Iveco Bus’s ability to deliver innovative, zero-emission solutions positions it as a key partner in achieving Italy’s decarbonization goals.
The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) will continue to monitor these developments as electric bus adoption accelerates, contributing to a cleaner, greener future for Europe’s urban transport systems.
