Electric mobility in Portugal reached remarkable milestones in 2024, culminating in December with a historic record of over 10,000 EVs registered in a single month. This achievement reflects the accelerating adoption of sustainable transport solutions and sets a solid foundation for future growth.

 

December 2024 Highlights:

  • Total EV Registrations: 10,442 vehicles (including new and imported used models across all categories).
  • Breakdown:
    • 7,059 were 100% electric vehicles (BEVs).
    • 3,383 were plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
  • Comparative Growth: BEV registrations in December grew by 29.54% compared to December 2023.

This monthly peak follows successive record-breaking months in September, October, and November, with BEVs becoming the top-selling category in Portugal's light passenger vehicle market in September. These trends underline the growing confidence of Portuguese consumers in electric mobility.

 

Annual Summary of Electric Vehicle Market in Portugal for 2024:

  1. Total EV Sales in 2024:
    • 100% Electric Vehicles (BEVs): 41,741 units (+14.7% YoY).
    • Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs): 28,346 units (+4.5% YoY).
    • Combined BEV and PHEV registrations reached 70,087, marking a 10.31% annual increase.
  2. Market Share of BEVs:
    • Light passenger BEVs secured a 19.91% market share by the end of 2024.
    • This significant growth positions BEVs as a dominant force in Portugal’s vehicle market, projected to surpass internal combustion engines soon.
  3. Electrified Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs):
    • A total of 2,340 units were registered in 2024, representing a 4.8% decline compared to 2023.
    • Fully electric LCVs saw a 5.1% drop in registrations, totalling 2,323 units for the year.
  4. Electrified Heavy Vehicles:
    • Only 123 units were registered in 2024, a significant 69.2% decline compared to 2023.

Best-Selling Electric Vehicle Brands and Models:

Brands:

  • Tesla emerged as the market leader with 9,760 BEVs, more than twice the volume of its closest competitor.
  • Other leading brands included BMW (4,074), Volvo (3,203), Peugeot (3,017), and Mercedes-Benz (2,860).

Models:

  • The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 led the rankings, reflecting consumer preference for efficient and innovative designs.
  • Volvo’s EX30 and Peugeot e-208 also made strong showings.

 

Infrastructure and Renewable Integration:

Portugal’s progress in electric mobility goes hand-in-hand with advancements in charging infrastructure and renewable energy:

  • New charging stations were installed nationwide at a rapid pace, ensuring accessibility for the growing EV fleet.
  • Renewable energy integration into the grid reached a milestone of 81%, supporting the sustainable operation of electric vehicles.

 

Looking Ahead:

2024 proved that Portugal is committed to transitioning to electric mobility, with growing EV sales, an expanding charging network, and strong consumer adoption. However, challenges such as further increasing charging infrastructure capacity and maintaining the affordability of EVs remain.

As Portugal moves into 2025, the momentum is expected to continue, with new EV models entering the market and further policy support anticipated. The commitment to decarbonization, alongside increasing public and private sector collaboration, will be critical to sustaining this progress and achieving long-term climate goals.

Electric mobility represents more than just a shift in transportation—it is a cornerstone of Portugal’s sustainable future. The country’s achievements in 2024 mark another step forward in reshaping mobility and environmental responsibility.
