Belgium marked a record-breaking year in 2024 with electric mobility taking centre stage. Both the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) and the expansion of charging infrastructure underscored Belgium’s commitment to the green transition.

Key Highlights for 2024

  • New BEV Registrations: 127,750 (+37%)
  • Public Charging Points: 83,111 (+72%)

These figures solidify Belgium's position as a leader in electric mobility, aligning with its goal to reach 2 million EVs by 2030.

Record BEV Market Share

For the first time, electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 52.3% of all new car registrations, surpassing traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. BEVs alone made up 28.5% of the market, overtaking plug-in hybrids (15%).

The growing adoption of BEVs was largely driven by corporate fleets, which accounted for 86.7% of new BEV registrations in 2024.

Challenges and Opportunities

Secondhand BEV Market

Despite new BEV sales thriving, the secondhand market struggles with low demand and depreciating values. Rest values for BEVs have dropped by 30-40% after four years, creating challenges for dealerships.

Policy and Infrastructure

Belgium's EV success hinges on strong government policies, such as tax incentives for corporate fleets and regional subsidies. However, industry experts warn against a “stop-and-go” approach, which could hinder growth.

A focus on developing bidirectional charging infrastructure and addressing the resale value of BEVs could further stimulate domestic demand and reduce the export of secondhand EVs.

Outlook for 2025

The Belgian EV market is set to expand further in 2025, driven by:

  • New affordable BEV models from both European and global automakers.
  • Increasing availability of public charging points.
  • Growing adoption of EVs among private consumers.

"Belgium's EV journey demonstrates the importance of consistent policy support and innovative infrastructure solutions. If we continue on this path, we can achieve our climate goals and strengthen our leadership in the green transition,” concludes Bart Massin, Chairman of EV Belgium.
