Belgium recorded another landmark year for electric vehicles (EVs) in 2025, confirming its position as one of Europe’s leading EV markets. Despite challenging economic conditions, EV adoption accelerated across passenger cars, vans and trucks, while charging infrastructure expanded at an unprecedented pace. EV registrations and market share in 2025 A total of 145,170 electric vehicles were sold in Belgium in 2025, up from 127,759 in 2024 (+13.6%). This growth translated into a 35% market share, meaning that more than one in three newly registered cars in Belgium was electric. The Belgian market thus moved beyond the symbolic threshold of 30%, underlining the structural nature of the transition to zero-emission mobility. AF Market share of total registrations (M1) Newly registered alternative fuelled (BEV, PHEV, H2, LPG, CNG, LNG) passenger cars as a percentage of the total number of registrations. Total EV fleet in Belgium By the end of 2025, the Belgian EV fleet reached approximately 450,000 vehicles, compared to 308,158 in 2024. This represents a sharp year-on-year increase and places electric vehicles at around 7–8% of the total Belgian passenger car fleet. Corporate dominance and commercial vehicles Company cars continued to play a decisive role in Belgium’s electrification. In 2025, 89% of newly sold battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered as company cars, reflecting the impact of fiscal incentives and corporate decarbonisation strategies. Electrification also progressed in commercial transport. By the third quarter of 2025, Belgium counted 10,805 electric vans, corresponding to 0.81% of the total vehicle fleet. The electric truck segment, while still small, reached 508 vehicles by Q3 2025, of which 246 were registered during 2025 alone. Charging infrastructure expansion Charging infrastructure expanded in parallel with vehicle uptake. Belgium counted 106,677 public and semi-public charging points in 2025, an increase of 23% compared to 2024. Alternating current (AC) charging points grew by 22% to 99,341 units, while high-power direct current chargers above 150 kW increased by 57% to 5,547 units. The strongest relative growth was observed in Wallonia and Brussels, indicating a gradual rebalancing of regional infrastructure availability. Outlook for 2026 Looking ahead, the Belgian EV fleet should surpass 600,000 vehicles in 2026, corresponding to roughly 10% of the total Belgian vehicle fleet and marking a decisive milestone in the country’s transition to zero-emission mobility. Continued fleet electrification, combined with further expansion of fast-charging infrastructure, is expected to sustain strong EV sales momentum throughout 2026.
